MTA officials announced that the LIRR service will be shut down on Monday, Feb. 1 due to the storm, which is now dropping between one and three inches of snow per hour.
According to MTA chairman Patrick Foye said the LIRR will operate its last trains to and from Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
Before shutting down trains, the LIRR was operating on delays topping 30 minutes during the storm. MTA officials said that by suspending service, it will allow crews to work through the afternoon and night to clear the rails of the rapidly accumulating snowfall.
“These trains, in most cases, are expected to reach their final destinations by 5 p.m.,” Foye said during a briefing on Monday with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
If the inclement weather continues battering Long Island, Cuomo also cautioned that it could lead to closures of major roadways, including the LIE and Northern State Parkway, noting that “if the storm keeps up, the plows will not be able to keep up.”
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said NICE Bus, is going to suspend service beginning at 1 p.m. on Monday, while Suffolk County Transit suspended all bus service on Monday in advance of the storm.
